Grok
xAI's model family and chatbot, launched in November 2023 and now developed inside SpaceX's AI division across text, image, video and voice.
Grok is the family of AI models and the chatbot built by xAI, the company Elon Musk founded in 2023 and which SpaceX acquired in February 2026. xAI announced Grok on 3 November 2023 as an early beta with “a bit of wit” and real-time access to information from the X platform, powered by a model called Grok-1 that the company said it had trained in about four months.
The family has moved quickly through generations. xAI open-sourced the weights of the original Grok-1 in March 2024, but later models have been released as closed weights. Grok-2 added image generation in 2024, Grok 3 arrived in February 2025 and Grok 4 in July 2025. In 2026 the company shipped Grok 4.5 in July, Grok 4.6 in August, which it positioned for long-running agents, and Grok 4.7 in September. Alongside the main line it offers Grok Imagine for image and video generation, Grok Voice for speech, and Grok Build and the Composer models for coding.
Grok accepts text, images and documents and can generate text, images, short videos and speech. It is available at grok.com, within X, in iOS and Android apps, and through an API that the company says exposes the same models as the consumer product. Grok 4.6 was also added to GitHub Copilot, Amazon Bedrock, Google’s Gemini Enterprise agent platform and Microsoft Foundry in August 2026.
Since the SpaceX acquisition the models are developed within SpaceX’s AI division, which brands itself SpaceXSI on its website. Grok has faced regulatory scrutiny in several jurisdictions over harmful outputs. Neither xAI nor SpaceX describes Grok as a Super Intelligence.
