xAI
Elon Musk's AI company, maker of the Grok models and the Colossus supercomputer, acquired by SpaceX in February 2026 and now operating as SpaceX's AI division.
xAI is the AI company founded by Elon Musk in 2023 and announced publicly in July of that year. Its stated mission is to “accelerate human scientific discovery,” and its website describes the company as building “AI to understand the universe.” It released the first version of its Grok chatbot in November 2023, distinguished at the time by real-time access to posts on X.
The company built its training infrastructure quickly, including the Colossus supercomputer in Memphis, Tennessee, which came online in late 2024 and has since been expanded. In March 2025 xAI acquired X Corp., the social network, in an all-stock deal.
On 2 February 2026 SpaceX announced that it had acquired xAI, making it a wholly owned subsidiary and creating a combined company that Reuters reported at a $1.25 trillion valuation. Musk later said xAI would cease to exist as a separate company, with Grok and X becoming SpaceX’s AI division. The company’s website now carries the brand “SpaceXSI” and the legal name “SpaceXAI LLC,” while its news archive and press coverage continue to use xAI. In August 2026 SpaceX completed the acquisition of Cursor, the AI coding company, which now reports into the same division.
Several co-founders left during the 2026 restructuring; by March 2026 Musk was reported to be the only remaining founder. Grok has drawn regulatory scrutiny in several countries over harmful outputs from its image and chat models.
The company does not use the term Super Intelligence in its mission or product positioning. Grok is offered at grok.com, on X, in iOS and Android apps, and through an API.
