Microsoft AI (MAI) is the division of Microsoft responsible for the company’s own frontier models and, originally, its consumer AI products. It was created on 19 March 2024 when Microsoft hired Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of DeepMind and Inflection AI, as Executive Vice President and CEO of Microsoft AI, with Karén Simonyan as chief scientist.

In November 2025 Suleyman announced the formation of the MAI Superintelligence Team within Microsoft AI, organized around what he calls “humanist superintelligence”: “incredibly advanced AI capabilities that always work for, in service of, people and humanity more generally.” Microsoft’s site describes the aim as building systems “designed to stay controllable, aligned, and firmly in service of humanity.” The company has not claimed to have built such a system.

In March 2026 Microsoft merged its consumer and commercial Copilot efforts into a single Copilot organization under Jacob Andreou, reporting to CEO Satya Nadella. Suleyman now focuses on Microsoft’s Super Intelligence and frontier-model work, also reporting to Nadella, and sits on the Copilot leadership team. Nadella described the move as “doubling down on our superintelligence mission.”

MAI began shipping in-house models in August 2025 with MAI-Voice-1 and MAI-1-preview, and in June 2026 released seven models at once, including the reasoning model MAI-Thinking-1 and the coding model MAI-Code-1-Flash. The models are offered through Microsoft Foundry and third-party providers and are built into products such as GitHub Copilot. Microsoft continues to use models from OpenAI and other partners alongside its own.
