Meta Superintelligence Labs

Meta's AI organization, formed in June 2025 under Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, pursuing what Meta calls personal superintelligence.

In its own words

Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL) is the umbrella organization for Meta Platforms’ AI work. Mark Zuckerberg announced it in an internal memo on 30 June 2025, writing that the organization “includes all of our foundations, product, and FAIR teams.” Alexandr Wang, founder of Scale AI, joined Meta as Chief AI Officer to lead MSL after Meta took a 49 percent stake in Scale AI. Nat Friedman, former GitHub CEO, joined to lead AI products and applied research.

Meta is one of the few large companies to put the word in its organization’s name. In a July 2025 letter, Zuckerberg wrote that “Meta’s vision is to bring personal superintelligence to everyone,” framing it as a tool for individual empowerment. Meta has not claimed to have built such a system.

MSL inherited Meta’s earlier AI lineage, including the FAIR research group founded in 2013 and the Llama family of open-weight models, the last of which was Llama 4 in April 2025. In August 2025 MSL was reorganized into four groups: TBD Lab, led by Wang, which develops frontier models; FAIR; Products and Applied Research; and MSL Infra. Chief AI scientist Yann LeCun left Meta in November 2025.

In April 2026 MSL released Muse Spark, its first model built from the ground up, which now powers the Meta AI assistant. Unlike Llama, Muse Spark launched as a proprietary model, though Meta said it planned a version under an open license. In March 2026 some engineering and data teams were moved from Wang to a new applied AI engineering organization, while Wang remained head of MSL.
