Anthropic
AI safety and research company founded in 2021 by former OpenAI staff; builds the Claude model family and Claude Code.
Anthropic is an AI safety and research company headquartered in San Francisco. It was founded in January 2021 by a group of former OpenAI researchers and executives, including siblings Dario Amodei, who serves as CEO, and Daniela Amodei, who serves as President. The company describes its aim as building frontier AI systems that are “reliable, interpretable, and steerable,” conducting safety research, and deploying its systems through products and partnerships.
Anthropic is organized as a public benefit corporation. Its board is elected by stockholders and by a Long-Term Benefit Trust, a structure the company says is intended to keep its long-term mission in view as it grows.
The company’s main product line is Claude, a family of models first released in March 2023 through a chat interface and a developer API. As of October 2026 the family spans the generally available Fable line, the restricted-access Mythos line for vetted cybersecurity and life-sciences organizations, and the Opus, Sonnet and Haiku tiers. Claude is offered through Anthropic’s own apps and platform and through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry. Claude Code, its agentic coding tool, has become a significant product in its own right.
Anthropic has raised capital rapidly. In February 2026 it closed a $30 billion Series G at a $380 billion post-money valuation, and in May 2026 Bloomberg reported a further $65 billion round at a $965 billion valuation. Anthropic does not describe its own goal using the term Super Intelligence; its public framing centres on safety and on the benefits and risks of “powerful AI.”
