Lila Sciences
Flagship Pioneering spin-out building what it calls Scientific Superintelligence: AI models paired with autonomous labs to run the scientific method.
Lila Sciences is a research company that describes its goal as building “Scientific Superintelligence,” a term it uses as a trademark. Its approach pairs AI models that generate hypotheses with what it calls AI Science Factories, automated laboratories that run experiments and feed results back into the models. In the company’s framing, the model is the mind and the factory instruments are the body.
The company was founded in 2023 inside Flagship Pioneering, the Cambridge, Massachusetts venture firm behind Moderna, and emerged from stealth in March 2025 with $200 million in seed funding. Geoffrey von Maltzahn is co-founder and CEO; Molly Gibson is co-founder and president. George Church serves as chief scientist, and the leadership team includes researchers in materials science, open-endedness and AI.
Lila closed a $350 million Series A in October 2025, led by Braidwell and Collective Global with participation from General Catalyst, NVIDIA’s venture arm and others, bringing total funding to $550 million. Press reports at the time put its valuation above $1.3 billion. The company has said it is expanding with hubs in Boston, San Francisco and London.
Its published work in 2026 includes an AI-run lab campaign that screened thousands of catalyst candidates for green hydrogen production, an RNA discovery program, and participation in the US Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission. Lila has not claimed to have achieved Super Intelligence; it uses the phrase to describe the system it is trying to build.
